road trip to dubbo

As much as I love travelling overseas, sometimes it's too easy to overlook the amazing things that are right on your doorstep. Needless to say, I've hardly been around Australia, or even to more remote areas within New South Wales... Anyway, it must've been months ago when my doctor was telling me about Taronga Western Plains Zoo, then my parents decided it sounded like a good idea and voila! We visited earlier this week for a short vacay. To stay in the zoo overnight it costs a ton and only certain people can really afford it (i.e. my doctor), but there are also various cabins and other types of accommodation around Dubbo for a fraction of the price.

Filling up on a ham and cheese croissant and hot chocolate before our big zoo adventure. We visited the Village Bakery for breakfast, and it was such an awesome little cafe/bakery! Basically it had any baked good you could possibly think of, and everything was just so fresh and tasty. Customer service was a win, too - in fact, all the people we encountered on our trip seemed so nice and friendly. That's not saying much in comparison to Sydney, where a majority of people seem to hate their day jobs...

The funniest thing I saw that day - this hippo was literally leaning against the fence there napping! I'm pretty sure hippos are perfectly capable of sleeping whilst lying down, but hey. At least he was doing it somewhere we could still see him...

A koala sleeping in what looks like the most uncomfortable position ever. I still wish I were him so I'd have an excuse to do this all day, though.

MEERKATS. When I first saw these guys all I could think of was Timon and Pumbaa, and understandably so (I think)...

Pizza from Pizza Capers for dinner. We were super original and had toppings of pepperoni, Hawaiian and supreme, which is literally what my family orders every time we have pizza together! The fresh ingredients made it taste really good though, and set it apart from the usual stuff we eat. As it turns out, Pizza Capers is actually a franchise but there are sadly no stores in the vicinity of where I live.

On the way home we stopped by Mount Panorama in Bathurst, and the view at the top was pretty cool. Turns out we weren't the only ones with that idea, and heaps of people just drive around the circuit for kicks. Anyway, that's about it for my mini trip, which probably won't happen again for a long time to come. Hope you're having a great weekend and I'll see you again soon!

  1. You got some really nice pictures! I remember visiting Dubbo zoo during a school camp once, it was so big we hired bikes to ride around it, haha. I definitely need to think about roadtripping more around NSW to stave off the Sydney boredom! I don't know if my parents trust me enough with the car though, haha.

  6. Those pizzas look divine, but all your photographs are amazing, to be honest! And to a British person Meerkcats no longer mean Disney, they mean the most awesome adverts (for a comparison website) ever. Type 'Compare The Meercat' into YouTube, it is pretty awesome, promise!

    1. Thanks! Most of the time I use a Pentax 35mm f2.8, but for the animal shots it was a Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 lens :) Good luck to you too by the way, maybe I'll see you around!
